What Happens in the Basement Doesn't Stay in the Basement

Basement Condensation

What gives the basement that "basement smell" we all know and hate? It's the result of moisture and humidity in the basement. Some of the signs of a wet basement include that musty smell, condensation on the windows or pipes, damp walls or floors, and crystalline deposits on the concrete. Unfortunately it not only smells bad, but it leads to issues throughout the home that can affect your quality of life and even your health.

The Stack Effect

Warm air rises. As it rises, it leaks out of the upper levels of your home. This process creates a suction that pulls air from the lower levels, such as the basement, to replace the air that has leaked out of the upper levels. Known as the "stack effect," this creates an airflow from the bottom of your house to the top.

Up to 50% of the air you breathe on the first floor
comes from the basement.

So, whether you spend time in your basement or not, your basement air is affecting you and your family, and even your pets. You are breathing in that basement air all of the time.

The Mold You Breathe

Humidity and moisture in your basement can lead to several issues throughout your home including dust mites, sticking doors and windows, paint peeling, condensation, and more. But one of the scariest impacts is on the health of your family due to mold created by a damp basement that is then moved throughout the house due to the stack effect. And that moisture doesn't just happen in the wet months, it can happen year round.

When it's hot and humid in the summer, rain or not, our basement may be the wettest it has been all year.

Doctors will tell you there's no such thing as good mold in a home. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) says mold exposure can cause nasal stuffiness, throat irritation, coughing or wheezing, eye irritation, or in some cases, skin irritation. Some studies have even linked mold exposure to asthma in otherwise healthy children and adults. People who have mold allergies and individuals with compromised immune systems can suffer more serious effects.

Mold can be controlled. You need to remove the existing mold and address the source of moisture.
